Current Projects

These drawings are based on patterns used on an heirloom quilt ca. 1860. It was passed on to me by my grandmother and was most likely made by my great-great-grandmother, Isabella Jane Kerr, although it’s also possible that she had originally acquired it from someone else. Trapunto refers to the technique of outline stitching and padding on the white-on-white quilt, creating an embossed, puckered surface. I was intrigued with the chiaroscuro created by this textured surface as illuminated under low light on my wall. I photographed sections of it and heightened the contrasts with Photoshop. The reference photos (bottom of page) were used as a point of departure for the graphite drawings. Panels are added as completed and can be assembled into larger or smaller configurations. This is an ongoing project as I now move into other media with it.
